Work Life Balance

You Weren’t Sent There Just For a Paycheque

The thought came to me in the middle of an ordinary shift.

Nothing dramatic.

Just somewhere between the routines and responsibilities, I found myself asking:

What if I’m not here just for the money?

Don’t get me wrong. We all need to be paid.

But what if the paycheque isn’t the reason?

What if it’s simply what comes with the assignment?

Looking back, I can see it.

One agency led to one shift.

One shift led to relationships.

Those relationships opened other doors.

What looked random wasn’t random at all.

It was placement.

Maybe that’s true for all of us.

Maybe we are exactly where we’re supposed to be.

Maybe the work is bigger than the job description.

Maybe being about our Father’s business doesn’t always look spiritual.

Sometimes it looks like showing up.

Doing ordinary things with extraordinary care.

Being faithful where you’ve been placed.

And perhaps that’s why, when I stepped into a senior role, the extra £1 was never the reason. I wrote about that in The £1 Was Never the Reason. I didn’t take on more responsibility because of the money. I took it because I knew I was capable, and because I no longer wanted to hide behind the curtains and leave difficult decisions to someone else.

Because you’re not just earning a living.

You’re being positioned.

So next time you’re on shift, don’t just ask,

“When do I finish?”

Ask,

“Who needed me to be here today?”

That question changes everything.
